Fitness Battalion Crossfit

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 0

Crossfit... heard of it?? Well if you follow me on Twitter you probably have...and you probably have gotten tired of seeing me talk about it over and over and over again. I swore I would never be one of those people and here I am... guilty. But hear me out for a minute and just maybe, I'll be able to inspire you to get involved.

I'm an extremely active person. Always moving cause I hate sitting still. Whether its yoga, running, biking, hiking or swimming, I'm always trying to find a way to stay active. I have been to many pilates and yoga classes but when I looked around, I never saw anyone that looked like me. I'm not an insecure person but how many pilates classes do I have to go to and be surrounded by 90 pound women to start to wonder if I fit in here. Pilates, yoga and all those classes are amazing and are a great workout, but I started to realize it wasn't the best workout for me and my body type...

So one day I was talking to an old friend from college and she was explaining to me this whole lifestyle that is Crossfit and I figured I would give it a try. I researched many different Crossfit gyms in Atlanta and ended up deciding on Fitness Battalion. Fitness Battalion seemed like a great home for me because it isn't just a gym...it is a community. With happy hours and monthly events, it also was a great way to meet some new people in the city. Saturday, January 21st, I took my introduction class bright and early at 7am. This intro class is required for anyone new to crossfit, no matter what gym you chose. It teaches you the basic workouts and correct form to prevent you from injuries. Sunday, January 22nd... I couldn't walk. I laid in bed wondering what the hell I had gotten myself into....and that was just the intro class.

The next two weeks I went to about 3 classes a week at Fitness Battalion (I would have loved to do more but I couldn't move the other half of the week). Intense. Intense. Intense. But after a couple weeks, my body and my muscles began to "get use" to the workouts and I wasn't as sore after. I have listed a couple of my workouts below from Crossfit to give you an idea of what they are. Each day at Fitness Battalion, we do a warm-up workout, then the WOD (workout of the day), and then a post workout. It is a steady hour of challenging your body in numerous different ways.

4/4/2012 WOD
3 rounds:
50 - 18 inch jumps
40 squats
30 sit-ups
20 pushups
10 pullups

3/28/2012 WOD
5 rounds:
15 deadlifts
20 box jumps
25 pullups

As you can see every day is a new workout so IT NEVER GETS BORING. Seriously, I have been doing Crossfit for over 3 months and have never repeated one workout.

What may surprise you is that it isn't just the workouts that keep me going back to Fitness Battalion everyday... it's the people. I look around and I am surrounded by strong women who are built like me. It feels great to be in a gym where you feel more confident about yourself each time you go. I now go to Fitness Battalion 6 days a week. I have cut down my 10k time by 4 minutes and am feeling stronger and stronger everyday. And on top of that, I have a new self-confidence and some pretty awesome new friends...
